Getting to Bochum

Plane: If you are flying in, we strongly recommend Düsseldorf Airport (DUS), which is the largest airport in the area. It is well-connected to Bochum through regional trains such as the RE1, RE6, and RE11 lines that will get you to Bochum main station in around 40 minutes. Make sure to buy appropriate tickets before you board the train, for example using the ticket machines at the airport station or through the DB Navigator app.

Car: Bochum can be conveniently reached by car via the major highways A40 and A43 and the city highway A448. During rush hour, expect traffic jams and delays all over the Ruhr area.

Train: Bochum is well-connected to the German high-speed rail network operated by the fast ICE and the slower IC trains. Refer to the official railroad website to check for connections.

Getting to University

HARRIS takes place on the campus of Ruhr University Bochum.

Public Transport: From Bochum main station, the U35 subway (direction: “Hustadt”) operates frequently and gets you to university campus via the “Ruhr Universität” station in around 10 minutes. If your hotel is located in city center, we recommend getting a Zone-A “24-StundenTicket” (day pass, 7.60€) for each workshop day. You can buy tickets at the ticket machines in the main station or through the DB Navigator app.

Car: Ruhr University is located right at “Universitätsstraße” which connects the campus to city center and the A43 highway. Plenty of free parking is available in the P12 and P13 parking garages on the west side of the campus. Avoid other parking lots if possible as they usually reach capacity around 9 am.

Workshop Venues

HARRIS is taking place in two different venues on campus this year. To get there, please follow the instructions below and do not trust any navigation app on campus. Due to the general layout of the campus and ongoing construction, it is quite easy to get lost.

  • Tutorials (March 23): The tutorials are held on the ground floor of the MC building, which is home to MPI-SP and the computer science department of RUB.
  • Main Workshop (March 24 & 25): The main HARRIS workshop is held in the university’s convention center aka. “Veranstaltungszentrum” (VZ).

Please refer to the campus map below to find your way to the venues from (A) the P12 and P13 parking garages or from (B) the U35 station “Ruhr Universität”. We will also put up signs and offer pick-ups from (A) and (B) on March 23 & 24, 2026. Finding your way around the campus is not easy, so we strongly recommend taking advantage of these offers.

Dinner Locations

  • Tutorial Dinner (March 23): The tutorial dinner on Monday is for tutorial attendees only and will be at the restaurant Q-West on university campus, right next to the MC building where the tutorials are held.
  • Workshop Dinner (March 24): The workshop dinner on Tuesday will take place in the restaurant Livingroom located in the city center.

How to get to the Livingroom

  • Public Transport: From university campus, take the U35 and get off at Bochum Hbf (main station). If you don’t have a day pass, buy a single-ride Zone-A ticket (3.80€) at the campus station before riding. Exit through the station’s main entrance, cross the wide road in front of the train station and turn left immediately. Turn right at Luisenstraße, then the restaurant will be on your right side after around 100m.
  • Car: You can park your car in garage P2 (“Dr.-Ruer-Platz”), the entrance can be found in Luisenstraße right next to the Livingroom. Please note that many parking garages in Bochum are connected by tunnels, so try not to get lost underground. Overnight parking (between 6pm and 10am) costs just €4, so you can even leave your car there until the next morning. Note, however, that the parking garage is closed (no exit) between midnight and 6:30am.
